"I AM HERE TO SHOW MY STRUGGLE AND MOTIVATION IN LIFE..."
National swimmer and painter Yusuf Akgün, who was electrocuted on a high voltage line at the age of 6 while working as a shepherd in Iğdır and lost both of his arms, touched the participants with his life story. Stating that he never lost his determination and faith despite all the difficulties he experienced, Akgün described his obstacle-free career with the following words:
"I lost both of my arms when I was 6 years old. Due to financial difficulties, I stayed in the Child Protection Agency for 18 years. While I was staying in the kindergarten, I started holding a pencil with my mouth at the age of 8. I started doodling when I was 9-10. I have been drawing with my mouth and feet for 25 years with the enthusiasm of drawing characters in comic books and sports magazines. I completed my undergraduate education in Fashion Design and Textile Engineering at a foundation university in Ankara with a 100% scholarship. In 2012 After graduating from university, I started organizing seminars and conferences to approach the concept of disability more scientifically. After starting the Science and Society Studies Master's Program in 2016, I represented our country in international competitions. Today, I provide disabled training to over 30 thousand disabled individuals in Türkiye, nationally and internationally. I have achieved great success in sports such as kickboxing, athletics and swimming. "I take part in projects such as Aksungur İHA-SİHA, TEBER-82, both as the promotional face and in the design and logo design part."
EMPATHY STUDIES FOR DISABLED PEOPLE IMPRESSED PARTICIPANTS
"The most important feeling in life is to be self-sufficient..." Akgün said, "I struggled to take care of myself and to show that I exist in society or in the nuclear family. You are dependent on someone in every sense. I had to cope with these somehow and I developed methods. I thought that if I did not struggle, I would enter a more difficult process. At the end of the struggle, I became the winner."
Akgün, whose speech was highly appreciated, had the participants do some activities to develop empathy towards disabled individuals. Asking the participants to write their names by holding a pen in their mouth and to drink juice from a glass without using their hands, Akgün underlined that everyone has the possibility of becoming disabled one day.
"THE REAL OBSTACLE IS IN THOUGHTS..."
Stating that they are very happy to host an individual like Yusuf Akgün, who is an example to the society, Altındağ Mayor Dr. Veysel Tiryaki said, "Yusuf Akgün's life story really excited me. Yusuf Akgün showed us that the obstacle is not in the hand, arm or leg, but in the hearts and hearts. We were very happy to know an exemplary person who achieved success thanks to his determination and belief. "I hope his barrier-free life story will be an inspiration to everyone and be taken as an example by everyone," he said.
Emphasizing that they are doing whatever it takes to make the lives of disabled individuals easier in Altındağ, Mayor Tiryaki said, "It is our primary duty to make Altındağ the most beautiful and easiest district to live in for all individuals, especially disabled individuals..."
