The Altındağ Municipality hosted a meaningful tournament as part of the celebrations for National Sovereignty and Children's Day on April 23. The chess tournament, held at the Ulucanlar Semi-Open Prison Culture and Arts Center, was filled with excitement and memorable moments.
The young chess talents of Altındağ showcased their skills in the tournament. Organized in cooperation with Altındağ Municipality, the Altındağ District Directorate of National Education, and the Altındağ Directorate of Youth Services and Sports, the tournament took place at the Ulucanlar Semi-Open Prison Cultural Center with the participation of 322 students from 9 schools. Held in four categories across primary, middle, and high school levels, the tournament not only featured fierce competition but also highlighted friendship and sportsmanship among the students.
FRIENDSHIP WON
Among primary schools, Şehit Mustafa Yiğitalp Primary School won the Mini A General Category, Özdemir Gürocak Primary School won the Mini A Girls Category, Gülpınar Şehit Fatih Korçam Primary School won the Mini B General Category, and students from Şehit Mustafa Yiğitalp Primary School claimed the championship in the Mini B Girls Category.
At the middle school level, Karapürçek Şehit Osman Kablan Middle School took first place in the Juniors Girls Category, Güneşevler Şehit Hasan Cevher Middle School won the Juniors General Category, Karapürçek Şehit Osman Kablan Middle School secured first place in the Stars Girls Category, and Veysel Tiryaki Imam Hatip Middle School became champion in the Stars General Category.
In the high school category, Gazi High School finished first, followed by Ulus Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in second place and Private Muradiye Boys Anatolian High School in third place.
“THE TOURNAMENT WAS VERY FUN AND EXCITING”
Çınar Yılmaz (9), a student from Şehit Mustafa Yiğitalp Primary School, said: “I am a third-grade student. I learned chess both from my family and from my teachers at school. I have a twin sibling, and we play chess together at home. The tournament was very fun and exciting. We competed in the Mini A category and finished in first place. I am very happy.”

Dr. Veysel Tiryaki, Mayor of Altındağ, congratulated all the students who participated in the tournament and said: “While competing against one another in the chess tournament, our children never let go of their sense of friendship. They all demonstrated remarkable patience and determination. They also fully experienced the joy and excitement of April 23.” Mayor Tiryaki added, “I wish lifelong success to our precious children, who are the guarantee of our future. I congratulate all the students who participated in this tournament, as well as their teachers and families who supported them.”
