Museums The Carriage Museum and House of
Atatürk…
Formerly known as Direksiyon (Direction) Building, the edifice was built by the
Germans in 1890 during the construction of the railway line from Anatolia to
Baghdad. The building was converted to a museum on December 24th of 1964
in memory of Atatürk, founder of modern Turkey.
Two-storey building has original lock-arched, cornered-stone decorum and
wooden roof. The second floor houses the reception room, study room,
bedroom and bathroom of Atatürk. Private belongings of Atatürk and old furniture
of the period are still being protected at their original form.
The first floor of the building is consisted of five different sections and was
renovated as Railway Museum. Souvenirs, documents relating the railway
since1856, medals, railway switches, rail samples, silver food plates used in the
railway carriages are exhibited in the museum.
The pickaxe and shovel used by Atatürk at the inauguration ceremony for the
construction of the railway line between Samsun and-Çarşamba in 1925 are
among the main items shown in the museum. The carriage used by Atatürk
during his trips across Turkey during the period of 1935 and 1938 is also
exhibited on the rails in the museum.
